Concentration camps in Estonia

Goldfields (Kohtla) (Vaivara subcamp)

SubcampIda-Virumaa1943–1944

Goldfields (Kohtla) was a Nazi German concentration-camp subcamp in Ida-Viru County, part of the Vaivara system (1943–1944).

Forced labour and fate

Most of the prisoners were Jews brought from the Vilna and Kovno ghettos; they were forced to work in the oil-shale industry (mines and processing). In 1944 the camp was liquidated together with the whole Vaivara system; survivors were taken to the Stutthof concentration camp or killed.
