Kohtla-Järve POW camp No. 289 was one of the largest Soviet prisoner-of-war camps in Estonia. It was established in October 1944 on the site of a former German POW camp.

The camp and forced labour

The camp had several departments, mainly in Ida-Viru County, and in 1947 it held about 13,000 prisoners of war (mostly Germans). Prisoners were put to forced labour in the oil-shale industry of north-eastern Estonia. See also Soviet POW camps in Estonia. Sources: Soviet POW camps in Estonia (Wikipedia).
