Estonian Tatar history

Umugulsum Zarip

Umugulsum Zarip (in the exile Estonian press also Ömögölsön Zarip) was an Estonian Tatar (Mišär Tatar), a physician and an active community member in exile. She was a daughter of the Tallinn merchant Umiar Zarip; before moving to America she lived in Butzbach (the US zone of Germany), later in New York.

Education

Umugulsum Zarip studied herbology (pharmacy) at the University of Tartu together with her sister Rähimä, and at the time they were the only Tatars at the University of Tartu. During the Second World War she fled westward via Germany and, according to the exile Estonian press, graduated from the University of Göttingen.

United States

Umugulsum Zarip moved to New York, where she worked as a physician in various public and veterans’ hospitals and in laboratories as a technician and lead. On her displaced-persons (D.P.) registration record her desired destination is given as “Great Britain or her Dominions when the independence of Estonia as it was before Sept 28th 1939 will not be restored” — a note reflecting her attachment to a restored Estonian independence.
